Income, planned vs actual spending, per-partner actual spend, savings rate and net worth in one view.

Before you type a thing

It ships filled in — with sample data

Every tab you saw above already has worked example numbers in it, so you can see how Couples Budget Spreadsheet behaves before you touch it. Study it, then overwrite it — nothing is "real" until you replace the samples with your own numbers.

Honey cells are yours

Any cell shaded honey is an input — type over the sample value with your own. These are unlocked and unprotected.

Grey cells calculate themselves

Pale grey cells hold formulas and are locked. Leave them alone — totals, dashboards and progress bars update automatically as you fill in the honey cells.

Set expectations

What this is not

  • Manual data entry — no bank sync; you log Planned and Actual yourself.
  • One shared file — since it's built for two people, you share it via normal Google Drive edit permissions, not a built-in login system.
  • No native charts — progress shows as color scales and bold totals, not chart objects.
  • Room for 20 budget categories and 8 debts — plenty for most households; going past that means extending the Dashboard and Split Calculator's SUM/SUMIF ranges yourself.
  • US-dollar formatting by default — changeable for any currency via Format → Number.

Getting started

Set up in 4 steps

01

Start on Monthly Budget: enter both incomes at the top.

02

Fill Planned for each category, then Actual as the month goes — Difference is automatic.

03

‘Left to budget’ should reach $0 when every dollar has a job.

04

Open Split Calculator to divide shared costs by each partner's income; track debts, net worth and sinking funds on their tabs; use Money Date for your monthly check-in.

Couples Budget Spreadsheet FAQ

What format does it come in?

A single .xlsx workbook. It opens natively in Excel and LibreOffice, and in Google Sheets via "Make a copy".

How do I use it in Google Sheets?

Upload the .xlsx to Google Drive, right-click it, choose Open with → Google Sheets, then File → Make a copy to get your own editable version.

Can each partner have their own login?

No — it's one file. Both partners edit the same copy in Google Drive using normal Google sharing permissions (add your partner as an editor).

Do I get updates?

Yes — every update to the 2026 edition is free. We email the new link when it ships.

Can I use a currency other than USD?

Yes. Select the money columns and change the number format via Format → Number — the formulas don't care what currency symbol is shown.

What's your refund policy?

Because this is an instant digital download, all sales are final — but if anything is genuinely broken, we fix it fast or make it right. Email [email protected].
